17 October , 2012 - Vance Auctions Ltd.

Dear readers, we are in catch-up mode, having been away on vacation in Florida for the past three weeks. It was a wonderful time of rest and relaxation. Now is the time to get back to work!

We tend to focus on individual Canadian stamps. But every so often, a cover comes to our attention that makes us sit back and do a double take. Here is one such cover, created by an individual in the 1800s who must have had a wonderful imagination.

Lot 4969
Scott 35/45, F1/2
Estimate $600
Realized $1,500

Vance called this "The Ultimate Canadian Bisect Cover, A Showpiece". It certainly was that and prompted some strong bidding.

Large Margins Prove Popular

Collectors love stamps with large margins. It doesn't matter whether they are mint or used. Here are a few good examples:

Lot 5248
Scott 4a
Catalogue $700
Realized $860

Lot 5261
Scott 5
Catalogue $1,500
Realized $1,400

Lot 5265
Scott 5b
Catalogue $1,500
Realized $3,650

We think the prices speak for themselves!

Excellent Small Queens

Lot 5454
Scott 35
Catalogue $47
Realized $160

Lot 5473
Scott 41
Catalogue $60
Realized $205

Both stamps were VF NH and the prices were strong. We particularly liked the large borders on the 3¢ stamp. If only all our stamps could be like this!

Imperforate Block from the Maple Leaf Set

Lot 5622
Unitrade 79ii
Catalogue $1,800
Realized $1,280

There are 2 types of the 5¢ Maple Leaf imperforate stamp. The more valuable one comes with gum on white paper and seldom appears at auction. A NH pair sold back in 2011 for $2,100. The less valuable one, like the above, comes without gum and is printed on bluish paper. It usually sells for $300 - $400, but one pair sold back in 2007 for $950. It must have been special.

Quebec Tercentenary - VF Used Copies

Lot 5696
Scott 101
Catalogue $125
Realized $148

Lot 5700
Scott 102
Catalogue $125
Realized $130

Lot 5707
Scott 103
Catalogue $175
Realized $85

When collectors look at their "used" Canadian stamps issued after 1900, they sometimes think they have little value. But, if they have these large borders and are well centered, they are highly desired and can bring strong prices like the above.

Imperforate Block

Lot 5801
Scott 146a
Catalogue $360
Realized $230

Vance notes that very few imperforate blocks exist for this set. Even though this block was VF NH, the demand for it was relatively weak. Possibly that is because people tend to want to collect the imperforates from this set as a set and not individually.
