Canadian Stamp Auctions
Recent Auction Highlights
16 March , 2011 - Vance Auctions Ltd.
area in which Vance has succeeded noticeably in recent years is in the
sale of imperforate stamps. These have featured prominently in the catalogue
offerings and many record prices have resulted. We counted six of them
in this sale, as shown below.
Imperforate pairs - New Record Prices
Vance notes that very few blocks exist as most have been cut into pairs. The above block was very desirable with large even borders. We have recorded the sale of three others at auction, but two of them had a “center cross” which is a separate variety in itself. So that leaves us with only one other regular Imperforate block compared to the one above and it sold for $600 in 2009. So the above price, being more than double the previous one, is new record and quite a leap.
To our surprise, we have no previous record of the sale of this variety in very fine condition. Perhaps that is why it received a stronger price than the preceding pair.
We have noticed this variety, which is missing everything but the red background, on a few occasions recently. We don’t recall seeing copies in the past which is a bit odd as the stamp was issued over 40 years ago. The above copy was NH, came with a Gratton certificate, and is unlisted.
- Imperforate Plate Block
The above UL plate block of the QE Jubilee is the eightth plate block like this we have recorded with prices ranging from $250 to $1,270. It attracted the highest price on record. It was NH and, according to Vance, only 40 pairs were found.
