Canadian Stamp Auctions
Recent Auction Highlights
29 March, 2012 - Spink Shreves Galleries Inc.
We usually look forward to the Collector’s Series from this firm in New York City, but this time we will be looking back to an auction that took place last March. We pay particular attention to these auctions from Spink Shreves because they consistently contain excellent material.
The Canadian stamps only represent a small portion of the overall sale, but they are definitely a very worthwhile portion judging from the excellence of the material. We have not converted the prices realized as the U.S. and Canadian dollars were pretty much on a par at the time of the sale.
The price realized for this lot was truly amazing.
The stamp was described as:
cancelled by complete fancy Running Fox, facing right with triangles
surrounding, of Hockanum, CT (S-E #PA-D6), a marvelous bold strike of
this exceedingly rare fancy cancel, stamp with insignificant small faults;
2011 PF certificate.
According to William J. Duffney, this cancel originates with Hockanum’s Postmaster Dudley Fox. Fox was a trained silversmith which explains the skills needed to carve this intricate cork cancel. It is believed that Fox would frequently carve new cancels as the design wore down.”
Thank you Spink Shreves. A most impressive auction.
