Recent Auction Highlights

24 March, 2012 - Ron Leith Public Auctions

It’s always exciting to review a Ron Leith auction catalogue. He puts so much spirit into his descriptions and he certainly offers a most interesting selection of stamps, covers, postcards, airmails and reference books.

We noted some unusual items such as actor Rudolph Valentino’s signed photograph which sold for $160. Of interest for stamp collectors was the Scott Hansberger collection of early dated stamp covers. One of them sold for $1,400. We also noted the set of auction catalogues from the Harmer sale of the Dale-Lichtenstein collection of BNA which went for $170. We acquired a set of these a few years ago and were greatly impressed by the material it contained.

Our review starts off with these two 5¢ beavers. The first was mint and the second was used.

Lot 1924
Scott 15
Catalogue $525
Realized $900

Lot 1926
Scott 15iv
Estimate $250
Realized $330

The first was a beautiful copy with original gum, seldom seen so well centered. It amazes us that a stamp with such minuscule borders can be centered at all. The Scott catalogue states that the values for the stamps of this set “are for examples with perfs touching the design”. The second stamp was the 12 x 11.95 perf variety.

3¢ Small Queen – Rare “Kiss Print ” Variety

Lot 1961
Scott 37iv
Estimate $2,000
Realized $950

This stamp was off centre, had a strong cancel and was creased on top. Yet it is very collectible because it was the rare “kiss print” variety. It is only the second reported copy. We think that the new owner is most fortunate to have acquired this rare stamp at such a modest price.
