Recent Auction Highlights

5 March, 2011 - Matthew Bennett Auctions

This sale took place at the beginning of March and included 5 Canadian lots. We show 3 of them below. The prices realized have been converted at the rate of $1US = 0.97 Cdn.

Lot 1534
Scott 387a
Catalogue $48,000
Realized $31,525

The catalogue notes that only about 400 examples have been discovered, most by the non-collecting public, resulting in some mishandling and a good number of minor flaws including light creases and fingerprints on the gum. Centering is also somewhat of a problem on many of the known examples.

Lot 1535
Scott 387a
Estimate $10,000 - 15,000
Realized $11,155

This was described as one of the nicest of the 16 recorded covers. It is identified as No. 16 in the John Jamieson summary report of inverted seaway covers, published in 2006 in BNA Topics, where it states:
“Cover No. 16 was one of the three Seaway Invert covers sold from the Brigham collection in May 2004 at an undisclosed price. Apparently all three now reside in an “Inverts of the World” collection in Florida.”

Lot 1536
Scott 1181a
Catalogue $13,500
Realized $7,275

Not bad for a sale in New York that only offered 5 Canadian out of a total of 1579 lots. But each Canadian stamp was very special. It would be interesting to know who bought them and why they purchased just these few modern varieties.
