Recent Auction Highlights

29 January , 2014 - Eastern Auctions Limited

Welcome to the start of another year of stamp auctions. It promises to be an exceptional year based on what we have seen so far. This mail sale by Eastern is the first we have had the pleasure of reviewing in 2014. We start off with this 6p Albert:

Lot 1453
Unitrade 2b
Catalogue $2,500
Realized $950

This was the grey purple variety with 4 good margins. But it had a relatively heavy concentric ring cancel which resulted in a modest price. It came with a 2013 Greene Foundation certificate.

10¢ Small Queen

Lot 1466
Scott 45
Catalogue $725
Realized $375

This was a lovely copy of the 10¢ Small Queen. It was well centered, but unused (i.e. no gum). We’ve noticed a number of unused stamps at auction recently and the positive prices they went for. Back in 1974, in Commentary No. 56 “Early Canadian Stamps with No Gum”, we looked at how well some of the early Canadian stamps with no gum did at auction. Our study really surprised us.

Modern Varieties

Here are a couple of the modern varieties that were in the sale:

Lot 1606
Scott 614a
Estimate $350
Realized $346

Lot 1619
Unitrade 878i
Catalogue $2,000
Realized $776

War Tax- Unusually Fine Used Copy

Lot 1690
Scott MR5
Catalogue $30
Realized $65

We were impressed by this VF used copy and pleased that it sold for a price well in excess of catalogue.

PERFINS

We show below some of the many perfins that were offered in this sale. They seem to be much in demand these days.

Lot 1703
Scott O261 LH
Catalogue $75
Realized $47

Lot 1725
Scott OA122
Estimate $250
Realized $210

Lot 1744
Scott OA220
Catalogue $142
Realized $101

Lot 1754
Scott O248
Catalogue $120
Realized $90

Lot 1755
Scott OAC1
Estimate $250
Realized $210

It is interesting that most of these were used and not necessarily VF. It seems that these types of stamps are scarce enough that bidders overlook the normal attributes of centering etc. and are happy just to own them.

Eastern’s next sale will be a public auction to be held on February 14th and 15th in Halifax.
