Recent Auction Highlights

28 May, 2011 - Eastern Auctions Limited

This was a vintage Eastern public auction with stamps of great quality and amazing prices. We counted at least 20 new record prices which elevated Eastern to the top of the ranks of the auction houses in this category so far in 2011, an enviable position.

We tend to think of Eastern’s sales as primarily Canadian, but in this sale the stamps of Canada only comprised 31% of the total lots. The rest was made up of collections from around the world with special strength in Sierra Leone and the Canal Zone. Among the covers, an 1861 stampless cover from Hong Kong with an estimated value of $500 sold for an incredible $20,000.

Most noticeable among the Canadian stamps were the Admirals and this is where 16 of the 20 record prices can be found. The quality of the stamps was amazing as can be seen below.

Scott 12 - Unusually Well Centered

Lot 594
Scott 12
Catalogue $1,250
Realized $2,300

We have only recorded six well centered VF used copies of the above stamp in the past 10 years. This is an unusually low number and gives us an idea how rare a well centered copy of this stamp can be, mint or used. The best price we have seen for a used copy was $3,024, realized in 2007. The above price of $2,300 is the second best price.

The stamp has a clear four-ring “21” cancellation from Montreal and came with a 2011 Greene Foundation certificate.

$4 Jubilee - Clear Date & Well Centered

Lot 618
Scott 64
Catalogue $1,000
Realized $2,800

The price paid for this beauty says it all. This is a most desirable stamp, well centered and with a clear July 19, 1897 date stamp. The high value used Jubilees are notorious for being struck with “killer cancels” which completely deface them. This one was spared that fate and is exceptionally fine.

Outstanding Admirals

We show below six of the outstanding Admirals offered in the sale. All of them were XF NH and each one set a new record price.

2¢ Scarlet Registration Stamp

Lot 787
Scott F1b
Catalogue $625
Realized $2,000

We marvel at the quality of a stamp like this that is well over 100 years old. It was described as follows:

“An exceptionally choice and precisely centered mint example with a gorgeous post office fresh colour; an early 1889 printing of this key and elusive shade, with full original gum that has never been hinged."

We appreciate the fact that the individuals who have owned this stamp over the years have taken such good care of it.

5¢ War Tax Plate - The Finest in Existence

Lot 791
Unitrade MR2B
Estimate $12,500
Realized $10,500

This was described as a fabulous upper left plate inscription block of eight stamps showing a large portion of the guideline at the top left, minor perf. separation. There are a couple of light hinge marks in the selvedge only, leaving all eight stamps never hinged. Eastern notes that to the best of their knowledge, this is the finest plate multiple of the 5 cent blue War Tax among the very few that still exist.
