Recent Auction Highlights

16 July, 2008 - Eastern Auctions Ltd.

We must have lost our focus for a moment this summer, because we neglected to make copies of the images for the sale, so we’ll have to approach this review of the latest Eastern mail sale from a different angle. We hope you’ll find it interesting.

At the beginning of each Eastern mail sale, there is always a miscellaneous section with a selection of mini-collections. We’ll start with these and show you how they did.

It amazed us to see the variety of items offered. We note that the prices were very attractive from the buyer’s point of view.

Philatelic literature

We have encouraged our viewers to look seriously at the philatelic literature that Eastern offers in its mail sales. Here are some of the selections in this sale.

Someday we hope to get a copy of the above “Hinde” sale catalogue. Stamps from this sale still appear regularly at auction. The catalogue must have some wonderful examples and the prices in 1958 must have been unbelievably low when viewed in today’s market.

What is worth noting about the above is that the average price realized represented 69% of the estimate. This is better than we would have expected. Interesting!

Late arrivals

We always find something interesting in the late arrival section which is usually found at the end of an Eastern mail sale. For example:

Lot
Description
Realized
2967
Modern Canadian stamps - face value $500
385
3001
Scott 1370a-71¢ Chestnut 4 blocks, est. 1,200
525

The first lot, which sold for 77% of face value, could be used as discount postage. The amount of the discount is in the usual 75%-85% range. The second lot, if squirreled away for a decade or two, has the potential to become very valuable. Scott 1370a has a catalogue value of $50 per stamp, up from $22 a stamp a year ago. The four blocks contained sixteen stamps for a total catalogue value of $800. But these are plate blocks, so they should be worth more.

We wish all our viewers a very pleasant summer and lots of opportunity to quietly enjoy their stamps.

Eastern has two sales planned for August:

August 27th – a mail Sale
August 30th - a public auction
