The Best Stamps of 2006

We have never seen a year like 2006. The quality of the stamps, the number of special collections and, oh yes, the prices, made it a year to remember.

There were more new record prices last year than any year we can remember. Here are some numbers that illustrate this:

Not included in the above are least 15 additional new record prices we have just discovered for 2006. We may find more. Can this pace continuing for 2007? It seems impossible but we will find the answer in the months ahead.

To celebrate this outstanding year, we have put together some of the highlights from each auction house. Each of them must be very happy to have been able to offer these exceptional examples:

It is interesting to note that the catalogue value of the above 21 stamps adds up to $220,525 while the prices realized totalled $685,328.

We find it significant for philately that collectors are willing to spend high amounts for the best quality. There was a time when collectors purchased large quantities of modern dollar stamps. sheets and plate blocks that were commonly available. It could be decades before those collectors come close to getting their money back. But those who acquired the above rare stamps will likely do well over time.It may be painful to spend this sort of money, but it pays in the end.
